Cape Spear Walk 4 km walking. 1:10 hours. 119 meters climbed
|
We went out to Cape Spear this morning - the easternmost point of Canada - to visit
the Cape Spear Lighthouse Historical Site. It wasn't a long drive from our hotel -
just 30 minutes or so and we had time to do some work after breakfast before we
started out.

|
Cape Spear Lighthouse is still a working lighthouse with a flashing light and everything,
as well as being a historic site. There has been a lighhouse here since 1836 and the
original buiding is now a museum. It wasn't open yet for the season, but the lighthouse
has an impressive record - along with the Cantwell family who have provided most of
the lighthouse keepers over the years.

Obviously, the lighthouse is on a headland which we walked around with some steep
cliffs on each side. One way looked back towards Signal Hill - where we had walked
yesterday - and there was the usual National Parks red chair moment. During WWII
the site was used for a coastal battery and there is a lot of history surrounding St
John's role in the Battle of the Atlantic.

Back in St John's, we had some more special Newfoundland dishes for lunch - Jiggs
Dinner pie and Cod Tongues. Jiggs Dinner seems to be a mixture of everything - salt beef,
potatoes, carrots, turnip, cabbage, turkey with gravy. It was OK, but not as good as
the Cod Tongues and neither really compared to Fishermans Brewis, which is still
our favourite. Hild has made a collage of our Newfoundland dishes and, perhaps not
so surprisingly, most of the dishes are cod! Check out the Stranger Things page.

Tomorrow we will begin travelling west and therefore as this is the end of the Outward
part, above is an overall map of the journey so far, with driving in orange an ferries
in light blue. In 25 days we have driven just over 5,000 km and sailed another 400 km
on ferries. Walking has been about 160 km and in that distance we climbed about 5,000 m.
We have drunk a lot of tea (we need to buy some more at Costco on our way out of St
John's tomorrow) although not as much as if we had been at home!
