Port Hope Simpson-Forteau 206 km. 2:49 hours. Elevation maximum 325 metres
|
|
We left Port Hope Simpson in lovely sunshine just as a helicopter landed on a flat bit of land at the
back of the hotel. Just a one-person chopper, the pilot got out and checked in. "For
maybe a month", he said. Wow, I wonder what kind of job he has.... The surprise was how
nice it was after the snow last night, but there was still plenty of slushy snow on the road
|
|
Anyway, we were off to our next place to stay in Forteau, but on the way we stopped at
Mary's Harbour which is just down the East coast of Labrador from Port Hope Simpson. This
is a much larger and more active port than the places we visited yesterday. It looks like
there are crab, shrimp and cod processing plants and quite a few boats already in the water

Hild had found some nice walks accessed from the middle of the town so once we found
somewhere to park we put our boots on and went for a walk. They were there-and-back
trails but it actually worked well for the Gin Cove Trail - as you will see below! There
is also a third trail in the south part of the town, but we had to have some lunch and
then Hild's meeting so we gave up on that one.

|
Gin Cove Trail was a very well prepared trail with wooden walkways and stairs for much
of the way. The snow was still pretty deep in places (plenty of Legolas and Gimli going
on), but when got out to the cove it was really worth it. The snow was almost down to the sea, but
with the blue sky and sun it made a great picture. Coming back was easier because we
could use the footprints we had made on the way out.

There were lots of other interesting things we noticed: Not Bubba Gump - this is the Labrador Fishermens
Union Shrimp Company; a gnome house on the walk to Dr Moret's Cottage; a house full of wood; and Mary's Harbour's
version of Valle Handel.

|
We found proper milk in the shop (among other things) so we could make tea for lunch and
Hild had her meeting in the front seat of the car while eating. This is actually quite
a momentous occasion as it completes the coast-to-coast meeting series we started last
year with a meeting on the West coast of Canada, the geographic middle and now the
western-most point on mainland Canada!

Coming up: Work day tomorrow - with maybe some sighseeing along the Southern Labrador coast.
