Terra Nova 89.9 km - Walking. 5:27 hours. 634 m climbed.
|
Well, we had a lovely night last night - followed by a looong walk today. This park
is known as a "dark skies" site - where stars can be seen clearly due to a lack other
light coming from the ground. We had fallen asleep while the sky was still light, but
waking up around 1.30 am, even Rob could see stars through the clear panels in the
Oasis - without his contact lenses! Sadly, our phone cameras don't work on this so
you will have to take our word for it - or come here yourself.... Bring warm clothes
though as it is chilly to stand looking up on clear nights.

We had breakfast early as Hild had a meeting scheduled for 7.30. It looked lovely,
but it was still cold - so Hild found Rob a rock to do step-ups to keep warm while
the kettle boiled.

By the time we had eaten breakfast the sun had warmed up the Oasis nicely (and
begun to charge up our various electronic items) for Hild to have her meeting in just
her normal clothes. I think she deliberately sat in the seat with her back to the window
so that the others on the call would be jealous of the backdrop.... With the call
over by 9, we could then go for our walk.

We started out north from our campsite along the coastal path, which joined up with
a second walk, which was a loop, creating a drumstick kind of a route (see the map
above) and also meant we couldn't cheat and turn round early! It was a nice mixture
as the track kept switching between forest and beach along the bay. That meant a
lot of up and down though, so we were ready for lunch at Buckley's Cove not quite
half-way round the loop. After the loop, we then had to come back down the caostal
path and in the end we did 18.9 km! Needless to say there was a lot of going flop
after that, although the iPads wer now fully charged so Rob could watch some football
and Hild could puzzle!
