Hopewell Rocks - Moncton 59.7 km. 1:16 hours. Elevation maximum 70 metres
After a big day yesterday, today was more relaxing as we had a realtively short drive to Moncton. We could have reached Prince Edward Island, but we want to stay in the National Park there and they are not open until the middle of the week!
We had also been up late last night (Hild working and making very innovative use of a drawer) so we also had lie-in and a slow start. Since we had time, we also took the opportunity to get some laundry done. Some hotels have guest laundry facilities, but not the last couple of places and since we are going to be in a National Park next week we needed to get some done now. We spotted one (on-line) on our route and it was very good - we were done in about an hour!
Now that we are in the Maritimes we have to try lobster and we found a nice relaxed place that did a lovely lobster roll. It was along the riverside and we walked along the path afterwards checking out the (muddy) river banks. We still wonder why it doesn't all wash away, but this is a tidal river here and this was low tide so it won't look so bad at high tide. The signs along the river detailed the history of Moncton - with 8 families (7 german and one welsh!) moving up from Pennsylvania to become the first settlers. They signed contracts to work for five years, but ended up having to work the land for 14 years before they got their land grant in 1780. After this, the town became a major shipbuilding site - using local wood to build ships rather than shipping the wood out. Ocean-going ships followed the tide up the river to load and unload here.
It was lovely day - probably the warmest we have had so far - and at the end of the walk there was an ice-cream shack which clearly needed some help in reducing their stocks! After this we went up to our hotel and pretty much flopped out on the bed. A slow day, but nice to have them every now and then.
Coming up: Magnetic Hill
