Truro - Hopewell Rocks 226 km. 3:07 hours. Elevation maximum 285 metres
|
We made it into New Brunswick today and are staying for the next couple of days in
Hopewell Rocks on the western shore of the Bay of Fundy. We haven't finished with
Nova Scotia, but we are giving them some time to clean up after some forest fires
that were bad last week before the rain.

|
The TCH is a fast freeway through Nova Scotia into New Brunswick and as we didn't
have too far to go today, we had a bit of a lie-in and got on our way around 10.
Hild found us a nice detour for lunch - to see the world's biggest Sandpiper, called
Shep, in Dorchester. There wasn't anywhere to eat there so we located a nature
reserve a few minutes away and stopped there to make a cup of tea. There were no
tables so we ate in Mary Jane - which was a good move as the mozzies thought that
this was a chance for an early meal and dropped in on us!

Then it was a quick stop in Moncton for some provisions (milk) and we were at our
motel before 3. We had picked this place - Hopewell Rocks Motel and Country Inn - because
it is very close to the Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park which offers a great spot to
watch the big tide. As we are in the bay now (not up the river like Truro)
the tide is really big (14 meters!) and over many thousands of years has carved
some fun rocks just here - hence the name. The motel is only 1.7 km from the park -
just right for our evening walk to have a look around - and scope out where we plan
to be tomorrow....

You see, after our success (well, not abject failure anyway) with the time-lapse
video from Truro, we figure we are ready for the big one - a low-to-high tide video
of the shore here! Rather encouragingly, the entrance fee for the park covers two
consecutive days as they want people see both low and high tide. So we thought
we should go for a walk tonight and see if there is a good spot to set up Tøfflus
tomorrow, as well as find out the tide times. The Park center has some great information
on the rocks, the tides, the birds etc. so we are fully primed now.
Our friend and (former) neighbour Alexis had told us about
Hopewell Rocks as she had visited a couple of years ago with her sister - only
it had been foggy so the view wasn't as good as they had hoped. There is some
mist forecast for tomorrow, but as low tide is about noon, we figure it will be cleared
by then and we should be good for the afternoon.

Coming up: Hopewell Rocks - from low to high!
