Sept-Iles to Natashquan 370 km. 4:16 hours. Elevation maximum 108 metres
Hild's meeting went off OK this morning and as we had grabbed breakfast before it started,
we were out for an early walk around Sept-Iles.
Well, around the town of Sept-Iles - as you can see from the nice sketch the "sept iles"
are actually outside the bay ans need a boat to get to them! The walk was nice though
as Hild found a sneaky path along the coast/beach until we got to the harbour and then we
cut back through the streets to the hotel.
It was a longer walk than we had anticipated and we had gone with "little shoes" - not
our walking boots. Rob had even got another (cheap) pair of basic trainers to walk in
so that he could keep his Stan Smith's for best... Only Hild's sneaky path turned out to be
much sandier than anticipated and we should really have done what we usually do: Think
about it, and go wth the boots! There were some really interesting interpretive signs along
the walk, particularly the one explaing the history of Sept-Iles from historic fishing site
through trading post to commercial port. It is nice when we get a chance to catch up
on why a town or city has developed as well as the how.
After the walk, it was already nearly lunchtime so we took the Minions to St Hubert -
a chain of restaurants from Quebec that specialize in roast chicken. It was a big
lunch, but we had had an early breakfast so we were ready for it.
Then it was a (relatively) short drive to Natashquan, but not without a stop for a
proper cup of tea. The problem was that the wind, which had been pretty strong all
morning, was really going for it now and the place we stopped to make tea was a bit exposed.
It was called Belvédére De La Montagne Ronde - the lookout on the round hill - and we stopped
here for the view, but the wind made it a very short stop. In Natashquan we are staying in
a nice Auberge and we will plan what to do tomorrow about the boat to Blanc Sablon....
Coming up: Will the ferry to Labrador leave on time - or at all!
