[Halifax 12.4 km, 3 hours walking. 360 metres climbed. 3.2 km, 14 minutes sailed.
We had planned a cycle tour around Halifax today, but the weather was cold and quite misty with a threat of rain so we just went with a walk instead. Which was a good thing in the end as we ended up really tired anyway. We did get to ride the ferry there and back though and we scoped out a nice bike hire place so we can go for our ride if the weather gets better in a day or two!
The ferry was fun - an almost round little boat called "Craig Blake" who chugged across the 1.6 km in just 7 minutes. It was a bit of a walk to get there from our hotel, but it wasn't so bad at ground level - the mistiness was really just very low cloud with the tops of the buildings and bridges basically fogged out!
The harbour at Halifax was a nice mix of historical information with a lot of modern development. There are a lot of condo buildings (or maybe hotels) which don't appear on the Google Maps satellite photo so these must be quite new, but the boardwalk has monuments to the original settlers as well as a lot of history Halifax during both world wars. There were so may differnt kinds of boats - from fishing boats and ferries up to very posh sailing boats. There was even a luxury mega-yacht, but we didn't see who it belonged to.
Then we walked through the old part of the City of Halifax. Government House was completed in 1805 and upset people with how expensive it turned out to be. We wondered if that is why there are sentry boxes outside. St Mary's Basilica was completed in 1874 and is also quite impressive as well as being one of the first Roman Catholic cathedrals in North America. We walked up to the Citadel as well, but we were already tired and hungry so we didn't stay up there. We found a nice pub called "The Split Crow" - a nickname it acquired from using the two-headed eagle as a name on the original pub! We over-ordered as the portions were so big and after we had done our best we realised that we were pretty much done for the day.
We took the ferry home after lunch as we were very tired. On the walk back to our hotel we noticed that the low cloud had lifted quite a bit - these are the chimneys at the power station with the pictures taken on our way out at 9.05 am and 2.45 pm on our way home.
Coming up: Another work day - unless the weather surprises us....
