Twillingate - Terra Nova National Park 314 km. 4:45 hours. Elevation maximum 145 metres
|
|
|
We were up early this morning because we wanted to grab another walk in Tillingate
on our way to Terra Nova. We had seen a reference to a trail called "Top Of Twillingate"
which seemed like a nice trip so we packed up Mary Jane and drove a short trip to the
trail head.
|
|
The trail wound up a hill to a wooden tower with three or four look-outs along the way.
There were very solid hand-rails along the steep bits and at one of the look-outs a
wooden camping platform. There was a geocache site here that people use to leave little
ites as a sort of reminder - the Minions were fascinated! The views over the islands were
lovely, but hard to do justice in a photo - even a panorama shot.

|
We saw a lot of one particular rabbit early on during the walk and realised that
we were also missing our designated Robin. Hild realised that with the early start
we must have caught our Robin on the hop, so he called up a stand-in rabbit until
he could catch up again. We saw the Robin again at Terra Nova so he is back on duty
now.

After this we drove to Terra Nova, stopping on the way for our usual lunch - although
we did have a bit of an issue finding somewhere to stop. We found a nice municipal park -
only to have the workers say that it wasn't open yet. And then a combined shower/laundry/toilet
station in the middle of a town - that was also locked! In the end we arrived at
Terra Nova and found our Oasis - a dinky little cabin set up in the tree-tops! We had
described it as a water drop, but Kristin suggested a space-ship...

|
|
After a relax in the Oasis, we made dinner in the cooking shelter (no cooking allowed
inside) as it threatened to rain. We made pancakes with ham and maple syrup. OK,
yes, we know this is what normal people eat for breakfast, but we don't care!
|
A bit of a delayed posting as we struggled in Terra Nova National Park - not to get
online, but with battery-life! Our Oasis is a lovely, but the only power comes from a single
solar panel and although it kept our phones re-charged, it was not enough to run our
computers and after Rob had downloaded the day's photos and GPS data from Max, there
was very little left to edit the web page. Hild was saving her battery power for a
video conference in the morning so this has had to wait for a few days.

Coming up: Midnight star-gazing and a loooong walk.
