Oot and Aboot in Thunder Bay
We woke up excited about a full day of exploring Thunder Bay by visiting places recommended primarily by Donna and Andrea. Thanks for your excellent suggestions! However, before we could go out and burn off the bacon and eggs for breakfast, we (Rob) had to scrape ice off our windshield! Can't it be summer soon? First off we went to The Bluffs lookout point west of Boulevard Lake. As expected we got a great view of the Sleeping Giant, and he was still asleep. So we slid down the hill again across snow, ice and oh so many potholes. Instead we drove over to Adelaide Street where Donna grew up. We went to the top of the hill by Leslie Ave hoping to take photo of the house, but there were so many building sites so we are worried that the house is gone. Walking down to Grenville Ave we took several photos and will show them to Donna when we return home to see if any of them was hers!
Next we walked down to Boulevard Lake where Donna used to skate in the winter. We walked across the dam at the end of the lake to marvel at the speed and amount of water rushing by. Off to one side there is a fish ladder so that the dam doesn't prevent fish from travelling upstream. It would have been great to time our visit in late June for the spawning season.
During our walk along Boulevard Lake we made the aquaintance of a local gentleman with many tall stories from Thunder Bay. He did indeed prove that some Canadians use "eh" in every other sentence. He also proved how friendly Canadians are. We admit to not understanding everything he was telling us, which is only fair because he couldn't understand our English and asked if we were French... Still we shared some good laughs and agreed that today (as many other days) would be a good day to have pierogies.
To explore downtown we parked our car at Marina Park. We walked around and took more pictures of - yes the Sleeping Giant - as well as a Spirit Garden with a monument showing different spirit animals. Our favourite was the image of "People of Turtle Island - All walks of life live on turtle island together". The Thunder Spirit and the Great Lake Merman were also featured in the display. In Marina Park is also where we spotted our choice of where to live in Thunder Bay - some nicely placed condos on the harbor front. Much of the harbor is not accessible from private/residential properties so this is prime property and most likely out of our price range.
On our way across town we came across this man made of different animals. We think we could identify a beaver, squirrel, bird, duck, wolf, groundhog, and a goose. While it is interesting to view we know not of its origin or significance. One of our destinations was Kangas Sauna - a real Finnish sauna with restaurant and gift shop. We had a look around and noticed the minute you walked in the door, it felt like entering a sauna. Ah, the smell of the wood structure and hot water is something special and lovely to us! We did not take the time to have an actual sauna. Of course, we did take the time to enjoy their pancakes and secure some souvenirs T-shirts and fleece!
Next we had a walk around Lakehead University where Donna studied. Looking at the buildings we suspect that many of them have been built since. One old building may still be original, although now it holds a very sad-looking bike repair shop.
On our way back to downtown we walked past Hillcrest Park - and guess what? - we got a good view of the Sleeping Giant and Thunder Bay.
The goal from the start had been to be in Thunder Bay for 4th of May. Why, do you ask? We had seen an announcement for the Pierogi Days being celebrated at the Polish Combatant's Association building on Cumberland Street. We couldn't miss that, so we walked 14 km this day to see the city and to have deserved warm pierogies in the park. Ah - so yummy also with cabbage rolls to boot. The sun was nice and warm and it was a perfect day.
Andrea recommended that we try the famous Persians - a delicious bun with icing on. She was right. They are yummy and we enjoyed them with a large cup of tea with our feet up to recover from a loooong day exploring Thunder Bay.

Coming up: Heading to Kenora via Kakabeka Falls, Upsala and Dryden...
