Winnipeg - Fort Frances (462 km, driving time: 5 hours 47 minutes, max elevation: 401 metres)

To avoid being caught in Winnipeg rush hour (if there is such a thing, we don't know), we had early breakfast and set off in Mary Jane. We wanted to make it across to the east side of town, outside the ring road, but we needed to have good 5G internet for Rob's meeting. Thank you Snus for that. The event was made more fun by pulling off the road and setting up at the "Centre of Canada" sign. Longitude 96 48' 35". He didn't actually sit in the giant Muskoka chair, but in the passenger seat with a plastic lid as table and sunscreens as shade from the heat. The meeting went well and the setup made us laugh. A good day!
Not long after leaving the Centre of Canada we lost mobile coverage, and by mid-morning we left the prairies behind, trees and hills were back. And suddenly we were back in Ontario. Internet kept coming and going - as expected.
By lunch we had made it back to Kenora and we managed to cross off two more items on our to-do-list: photo of "Husky the Muskie" and picnic at Anicinabe Park. We looked for Huskie the Muskie, but he was incognito wearing a mask so we are not sure we got him(!).
We thought the Anicinabe was just another urban park, but it happens to be where everybody in Kenora have their Friday lunch! Hild found the last parking spot. We hauled our picnic stuff across the lawn and secured the last available bench - possibly beyond its use-by date and threatened by erosion. Our short-term needs were satisfied, but we expect the bench is a goner soon… We had fun watching a golden retriever getting snuggles from lots of people having a big barbeque.
Then we swung south towards Fort Frances on a different road than we took on the way out - the "southern route"! From Winnipeg to Kenora there is just one road connecting Manitoba to Ontario so we had to use it both ways, but we have tried to find a different route apart from that. Besides, there were reports of flooding on the 'other' road so we figure this route nr 71 was better. And it was certainly prettier along the side of the many many small lakes that make up the area around here.

It isn't called Lake of the Woods for nothing. Lakes everywhere, small ones, large ones, marshy ones, and many hidden behind trees when we saw them on the map. It was fun to drive through a town called Finland - the Land of Thousand Lakes. We figure Eija would feel right at home here

Until we got stuck in a queue waiting for an accident to be cleared up! We never found out what the problem was, but after about an hour we were on our way again to Fort Frances.

We arrived in Fort Frances and checked in. We have a nice apartment-style place here so we did a bit of shopping for food we can cook - now that we have something more than the Trangia to cook on! There was time to shop at Safeway, have pizza for dinner, and enjoy some Netflixing.

Coming up: Relaxing in Fort Frances
