Lionel and Tap-Tap hooked up and ready to go!

This is an attempt to remind ourselves of our incredible journey to Outback Australia. At the same time we would like to share it all with whoever can find the energy to read it. But remember that there is no shame in just skimming through the text and look at the pictures!!!
This story is a compliation of e-mails that we sent off to family and friends during the trip
Enjoy!!!

Tap-Tap. Up-close and personal.

Before we start
The trip-plan had been rumbling around in our heads for a long time before we set off. Rob and Hild had discussed the pros and cons of whether to rent or buy a car for the trip. In the end I, Lionel, joined the family on the 9th of April 1998. My previous owners were a German couple in Gidgegannup east of Perth. Rob and Hild are not known for their skills with cars, but they through it safe to buy a used car from a German mechanic. This could be equated to going to a French cook for dinner or having a Swiss accountant. The rest of April and up to the departure date (28th June) was spent getting to know each other and learning more about four wheel driving (4WD) techniques. In addition, there were several things that we needed to purchase to be prepared for the worst and the best. Here are a couple of lists to give you an indication of what lay ahead of us (at the end of the story I give you some more lists put together as our 'Tour Nominations'):
It doesn't matter if we didn't need it:
- High-lift jack
- Chain and shackles
- Tyrelevers (one of them)
- All spares except fuses
- RFDS radio (phew)
- Spare wheels and tubes
|
Some of the most used things:
- Polly (portable 12 volt battery)
- Baseplate for the jack
- Netting shelf in Lionel
- "Stretchie" to hold the back door
- Tape recorder
- Tap-Tab with 12 volt inverter
- Conan the compressor
