Quantock Hills - Nov 2024

Quantock Hills - in the fog
We managed to visit the nearby Quantock Hills twice in two months, and we were met with fog both times!

On our way to the Hurley Beacon we were excited to find a sign promising wild ponies (and not to feed them). However, the fog was too dense to spot them before they spotted us and ran away.
We started hiking towards the Hurley Beacon not really knowing what the view should be like. The educational sign told us that there are archeological finds dating back to the Bronze Age. Rob scaled the stile - built to keep livestock in (or out?) and to let us hikers proceed.

We reached the Hurley Beacon and found that it is now a pile of rocks rather than a beacon to warn others of fire or attacking Spaniards! Still no view through the fog.

Below is a photo of the same view on a beautiful sunny day in March 2025 (although Hild is blocking the view again).
While we couldn't see the views from Quantock Hills, we could enjoy beautiful heather and avoid being stabbed by gorse.
Getting up close to the gorse - because there was nothing else to see - we did spot many decorative cobwebs covered in dew.
We returned in December to see the views - but failed again. We parked at a car park called "Dead Woman's Ditch", which probably didn't help to achieve a sunny disposition.
The main purpose of this visit was actually to test a Christmas gift we received from Secret Santa: a tailgate tent for Percy. It fit perfectly. We are looking forward to using it next year for our camping and picnic trips.

There is an ongoing discussion on whether we can call it a "bum-tent", but we mean "a tent that covers Percy's bum" not "a sub-standard tent".

Postscript: We will have to return another day to see the view!
