A Walk in Ottawa - November 2010

Back to Rob and Hild's page

This Sunday morning we were too lazy to go for a run. So we decided on a walk around our neighbourhood here in Ottawa.

Here are some photos to show you the variety we saw on a 2-hour walk.

Rob outside pointing out our apartment. A quiet morning in the Bytown Market. The big spider.
1. We stopped outside our apartment so Rob could point it out on the 3rd floor above the coffee shop. In the background you can see 'Metro' our 24 hour supermarket right across the George Street. 2. Life is normally very busy in the Bytown Market a couple of blocks away from our apartment, but this early on a Sunday morning it was very quiet. 3. Further along by the National Art Gallery we walked past the big bronze spider as usual. She's pretty scary! Her name is Maman (French for 'Mother') by Louise Bourgeois. There are copies of her all over the world including London, Kansas City, St. Petersburg, Bilbao, Tokyo, Seoul, and several more.
Champlain. The Parliament. A new monument.
4. We swung up to say hello to Samuel de Champlain where he stands looking over the Ottawa River towards Quebec while holding his astrolabe to the skies. Nice bit of trivia: he is actually holding the astrolabe upside-down!! 5. The view from Alexandra Bridge to the Parliament buildings is always good regardless of the weather and the season. 6. A new monument has appeared and we don't know what it is for. It looks like a giant birch tree trunk without any branches. But who knows what it really is supposed to be - other than really really tall and shiny....
Sneaky path. Skimming stones. Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
7. Then we took our usual sneaky path between the Art Gallery buildings to work our way down to the river. 8. Rob takes the opportunity to do some stone-skimming. 9. Around the corner we pass by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which is built to look like a battle ship.
Rideau Falls. Quebec. 24 Sussex.
10. We stopped to feel the power of the water going over the falls where the Rideau River meets the Ottawa River. The water falls higher than at Niagara Falls, but can't really compete with the volume of water. 11. And there - over on the other side of the Ottawa River is Quebec and in the middle of the photo you can barely see the Hilton hotel which sits on top of one of our fun places: the casino where all the slots machines live!!! 12. We didn't dare to take a photo as we walked past the Prime Minister's (Stephen Harper) residence at 24 Sussex Drive. The RCMP were sitting outside watching for loonies... so here is a photo from further away.
Down to the Ottawa River. Quebec.
13. We walked down a path to nowhere enjoying the colour of the autumn leaves - not their slippiness. 14. Quebec does look nice from a distance.
A pavillion and picnic spot. A broken tree Rideau River.
15. We found a nice park with a pavillion and picnic tables for all to enjoy. Too cold to stop so we moved on. 16. This tree has clearly given up under some pressure. 17. Nearly back home again and we cross back over the Rideau River.
Our walk.

And here is the full extent of our walk...

Now our muscles are tired and we're going flop in the livingroom. It is always fun to go for a walk in Ottawa.
