A spontaneous trip to Norway
The luxury of living closer to Norway is that we can do more spontaneous trips.
So Hild decided to pop over for a week-long visit. The weather was great, which is
not a guarantee at this time of year. Blue sky and sunshine in Valle.
Even during Adelheid and Hild's morning walks the sky was blue. It was snowy and cold
- it is February after all. We walked across the suspension bridge over the
weird called "Prestefossen" (the Priest's Waterfall).
We managed to include the most important food items (in Hild's view) during the week.
This included: Solo (orange drink) with raisin buns on the way from the airport.
Chocolate mouse, raspberry jelly, and custard (vanilje saus). Prawn sandwich.
Kompe with fried onion (potato dumplings).
Hild and Janet also bought Rob's favourites for Hild to take back home to the UK:
Jelly sweets (Laban seigmenn) and two types of brown cheese (brunost).
Hild had already cleaned out the shop's stock of Dundersalt (salty licorice).
It was important to visit the farm and say hello to all of Hege's animals.
There are quite a few by now: Dogs and cats living together.
Bulls, cows and calves - all friendly. Hild even shares her birthday with
one of this year's calves: Vårinn.
Horse, Shetland pony, and Fjording.
Crazy goats and a rather temperamental sheep. The advice is:
Don't turn your back on Pelle.
Chickens in every size and colour. Don't upset the cockerels as their
spurs are big and sharp!
Beautiful peacocks.
Fluffy rabbits called John & Deere.
The week flew by with much time spent with family and friends -
and lots of jig saw puzzling with Adelheid.
Hild also got to do some reminiscing and sightseeing by taking the bus from Valle
through Kristiansand, Arendal, and finally to Bjørnar and Gina's house.
A comparison of bus sheds put the ones in Setesdal - little log cabins -
ahead of those further down in the valley toward Kristiansand - boring!
I had another day with beautiful sunshine. Even in the cold winter,
Norwegian coastal towns look wonderful.
Driving in to Arendal brought back memories from when Hild was a student in
nearby Grimstad back in the 90s.
The view over downtown Arendal was so familiar.
A beach near Bjørnar and Gina's looks tempting - but it was very cold.
There was some time to explore their workshop and so many tools. Hild
felt right at home, and she was even colour coordinated with the red tools.
The next day was time to leave. Adelheid took Hild to Kjevik airport and back
to the UK she went.
Postscript: Plan to be back soon - with Rob too.
