Exploring Combe Hill Wood
|
|
Combe Hill Wood is a 30-minute drive from Burnham-on-Sea just south of Glastonbury.
It is a fun drive on narrow windy Somerset roads. Just before the car park at Combe Hill we
also pass the Admiral Hood Monument. A quick history revision reminded us of his contribution
as member of parliament as well as his efforts in the Royal Navy in the late 1700s.

When we arrived at the car park, we found that it has a heigh restriction of 1.9 metre.
Luckily Percy squeezed in with his 1.87 metres (including his antennae). Phew!
We have found several car parks having these cross bars installed to prevent people with
vans and campers staying overnight.

Even if we had done some research before, we didn't realize until we arrived that these
woods have organized orienteering paths. A nice map was helpful also for us who just
wanted a hike. Standard orienteering markers were spotted throughout the forest. Brought
back Hild's memories of life at high school in Hornnes with fun but challenging orienteering classes.

|
Once we emerged through the forest on the other side of Combe Hill from the car park,
we were treated to a beautiful view over the village of Dundon and the landscape to the south and west.
|
|
On our return towards the car we decided to do another loop, and realized quickly that
the eastern slope of the forest was all mud. There was even a warning sign and we chose to
ignore it. This was the event that sent us shopping for wellies days later!! So muddy and slippery
and it made Hild fall over and get caked in mud. No photos... Tee hee!!
More interesting was this odd-looking carved wooden chair. Fun to look at but
wet and muddy so not much for taking a rest.

|
The walk through the forest let us enjoy a wide variety of trees - some oddly straight and
organized and others gnarly and messy.

Now that we have wellies, we are so much more prepared for this hike.
If you visit Combe Hill Wood you have been warned.
