Azimir - Oct 2025

Azimir - Oct 2025
We were excited that Azimir could visit us in Burnham on Sea - all the way from Ottawa! We showed off what is now our local area: Burnham, Quantock Hills, Brean Down, Weston Super Mare, and Bristol.
The compulsory walk along Burnham's seafront. Technically it isn't the seafront but more the river/estuary front, but we "do (speak) as the locals".
We enjoyed a closer look at Svetlana Kondakova's glass and ceramic tile mosaic on the seawall.
By timing our various walks, we managed to catch the River Brue at high tide, and....
... at low tide
One day all three of us piled into Percy and drove to the Quantock Hills. It was a chilly but nice day for a hike across the heather moorland. One of our favourite walks.
On this day we also got to see some of the wild ponies that roam the moors. The idea is to enjoy looking at them from a safe distance. They may look friendly, but they are not.
We found it hard to ignore them while we were having our picnic in the back of Percy. The ponies got very close, but they were just ignoring us while they grazed the area around us.
We stopped to admire the twisted moss-covered beech trees in the forest on the northern slope of Quantock Hills. Some of the trees are twisted and gnarled ancient oak trees. Very photogenic trees and it is sometimes quite spooky to travel through the forest on a foggy day.
Back in Burnham we had the chance to celebrate Azimir's birthday with a slice of Bakewell Tart and cups of tea and coffee. If you want a good Bakewell tart, we recommend Cafe Aroma on Adam Street.
We went on another one of our favourite hikes: climbing the many steps up Brean Down.
Good exercise rewarded by a great view over Brean beach.
Despite a windy day, we found a spot with a bench where we fired up our camping stove one more time.
To the north we also enjoyed the view over Weston Super Mare.
The next day we went to Weston Super Mare to walk along the beach. Of course, we catch the view back to Brean Down.
A cloudy day for a walk on the beach, and lessons in how to avoid the dangerous sinking mud.
We chose to visit on a busy Sunday - on the day of the half-marathon. Hunting for a pub where we could enjoy a meal and some cider, we ended up at Cabot Court Hotel. The Canadian connection with Cabot is what we were after. No matter how busy the pub was, we got a nice window view of Weston Grand Pier.
Before dropping Azimir off at the train station in Bristol, we had a quick sightseeing walk around town. The weather dealt us many rain showers interspersed with sun. The upside: rainbows!
It had been a great visit, and we rounded it off with lunch at the Jolly Hog Pigsty on Wapping Wharf. We can highly recommend their burgers and their sausage rolls.
